Why British Homes Get So Damp

It's not just bad luck. There are a few things about UK homes - old and new - that make condensation almost inevitable. Once you understand what's causing it, the fix makes a lot more sense.

🌧️

It rains. A lot.

Over 1,100 mm of rainfall a year on average, and a maritime climate that keeps the air damp even when it's not actually raining. Humidity outdoors stays high - and that affects indoors too.

🏛️

Old houses weren't built for modern life

Around 38% of UK homes predate 1945. Solid walls, minimal insulation, and ventilation designed for draughty rooms - not for sealed double-glazed living. It depends on your property, but older homes struggle most.

🏠

We produce a lot of moisture indoors

Cooking, showering, drying clothes, even breathing - a typical family generates up to 15 litres of water vapour a day. Without somewhere for it to go, it ends up on your walls and windows.

🪟

Better insulation made it worse

The push for energy efficiency - double glazing, draught-proofing, cavity wall insulation - was a good thing. But it also meant homes became much more airtight. Moisture that used to escape through gaps now stays inside.

🌡️

Cold walls plus warm air equals condensation

Warm, moist air hits a cold surface - a window, a north-facing wall - and the moisture drops out as liquid water. That's your condensation. Simple physics, really. Just very annoying physics.

🦠

Mould moves in

Mould spores are always present in the air. But they only grow when humidity stays above 60%. Most UK homes hit that - especially bedrooms and north-facing rooms - which is why the mould keeps coming back.

What the System Actually Does

Two things working together: dehumidification removes excess moisture, and fresh air ventilation replaces stale air from outside. Here's how each part works.

Whole-House Dehumidification

The main unit is mounted in your loft. From there, insulated ducting runs to the central area or stairway. It pulls humid air in, strips out the moisture, and sends dry air back out - quietly, continuously, without you having to think about it.

❄️

Refrigerant coils extract moisture

Warm, humid air passes over cold refrigerant coils. Water vapour condenses on the coils and drains automatically - no emptying required.

🌡️

Smart humidity sensors

Smart sensors monitor humidity levels. The system runs harder when needed and backs off when the home is dry - using only as much energy as required. The smart app, with temperature and humidity monitoring, is included (needs 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and internet access).

🔇

Near-silent, whole-house delivery

Treated dry air is delivered to the central area or stairway via low-velocity vents - as quiet as a gentle breeze. Most homeowners forget it's even running.

Fresh Air Ventilation

Dehumidification sorts the moisture. But the fresh air side does something different - it replaces stale indoor air with filtered air from outside, so the home feels less stuffy.

Activated Carbon Filtration

Incoming air passes through an activated carbon filter.

🌿

Continuous background ventilation

The system runs quietly in the background 24/7, with automatic boost for high-moisture events like showers and cooking.

Outdoor Air Drawn In

Fresh air enters via a discreet external grille

The system allows for an adjustable ratio of fresh and recycled air. This lets you set the right balance of humidity removal and outside air. Both are dehumidified and filtered before entering the house.

From Survey to Sorted

Here's exactly what happens when you choose Dryzen - every step, clearly explained.

1

Free Home Survey (1–2 hours)

A Dryzen specialist visits your home at a time that suits you. We use professional equipment to measure humidity levels throughout, inspect problem areas, assess your loft and roof space, and listen to your concerns. We'll be honest about what we find.

2

Custom System Design (within 5 working days)

Our engineers design a system specifically for your home - sizing the dehumidifier unit, planning ductwork routes, positioning vents for maximum effectiveness, and specifying the correct fresh air solution. You receive a clear, itemised quote with no hidden extras.

3

Professional Installation (1–2 days)

Our own installation engineers arrive with everything needed. Ductwork typically runs through the loft - keeping disruption to your living spaces minimal. We protect floors and furniture, work efficiently, and leave your home clean and tidy.

4

Commissioning & Handover (same day)

We test and calibrate your system before we leave - checking airflow, humidity sensors, and controls. We'll walk you through everything: how to adjust settings, what to expect in the first weeks, and how to contact us if you have any questions.

5

Annual Servicing & Ongoing Care

Once a year, a Dryzen engineer returns to replace filters, inspect all components, and carry out a full system health check. Your system continues performing at its best - and you're protected by your 10-year warranty throughout.

What to Expect After Installation

Most customers notice improvements within the first few weeks. Here's a typical timeline.

Week 1

System Active

Your system begins working immediately. The unit runs frequently in the initial period as it reduces existing high humidity levels throughout your home.

Month 1

Condensation Reducing

Condensation on windows and walls begins to reduce noticeably. Indoor air feels fresher and any musty smell starts to diminish. Humidity levels stabilise.

Month 3

Humidity Stays Under Control

With humidity held consistently below 60%, mould has far less to grow on. It will not remove mould that is already there, so clean that off first.
