The short answer

Most damp in Upnor homes is either condensation or water getting in from outside, and the two need different fixes. Check gutters, downpipes and roof edges first, then ventilation and heating habits. A loft-mounted dehumidifier helps with condensation in owner-occupied homes with a loft, but it does not repair leaks.

Why Upnor homes can be tricky

Upnor is a riverside village on the Medway, in the ME2 area, and its housing is a mix of ages. Older homes tend to have solid or thin walls that run cold in winter, while newer ones are more airtight. Rain and wind from the estuary can drive water into exposed brickwork, so a failed gutter or worn pointing shows up quickly. Treat this page as a checklist rather than a verdict on your street, because every house is different.

A sensible order of work

  1. Look for water coming in: gutters, downpipes, window heads and roof edges. Our guide to leaking gutters and downpipes shows how.
  2. Read the pattern: a patch that grows after rain is usually penetrating damp, one that follows cold snaps is usually condensation.
  3. Improve extraction in the kitchen and bathroom so moisture leaves the building. See bathroom and kitchen extraction.
  4. Heat steadily and dry washing outside or in a ventilated room.
  5. If condensation persists in a lofted home you own, a loft-mounted dehumidifier is one option to discuss at a survey.
Is Dryzen right for a home in Upnor?

Dryzen is a loft-mounted dehumidifier with insulated ducting to the central area or stairway only, so the property needs a loft. It suits owner-occupied homes with condensation-type damp. One unit is rated for up to 150 m2, and extra units can be added for larger homes. It is not suitable for rentals unless the landlord authorises the changes, and it is no substitute for fixing leaks.

Questions we are asked

The river does not make walls damp by itself, but mild, wet weather keeps indoor humidity up and rain can soak exposed brickwork. Check gutters, pointing and ventilation before blaming the location.

Condensation shows on cold surfaces in corners and behind furniture, worse in winter whatever the weather. A leak follows the rain and usually appears beneath a gutter, roof edge or window.

Not unless your landlord authorises the changes. The unit is mounted in the loft, so it suits owner-occupiers or landlord-approved installations.

Around 50 to 55 percent relative humidity is a sensible target. A cheap hygrometer in the coldest bedroom will show how your home behaves. Humidity control helps stop the conditions mould and dust mites need; it does not clean mould that is already there.
